The Case for Cursor’s Acquisition
On Friday, SpaceX completed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor two months after announcing the deal. In a blog post announcing the acquisition, Cursor said the rationale for the merger was to give it access to SpaceX’s compute, letting it build “stronger models” that are also more cost-effective than it could on its own. SpaceX released Grok 4.6 on August 12, its second joint model with Cursor following Grok 4.5 in July, and independent benchmarker Artificial Analysis scored it 61 on its Intelligence Index. In other words, with SpaceX’s acquisition of Cursor, a company that could not compete on coding a year ago is now at the frontier.
For SpaceX, the deal lets it take further advantage of its unique edge among the various players in the AI race, which is the ability to build compute quickly at scale. xAI built Colossus, the largest single-site-scale compute cluster, in a matter of weeks. However, the company has struggled to match other frontier labs in performance and adoption, with Elon saying in March the company was not "built right the first time around” and had to be rebuilt from the ground up. Cursor had the inverse problem. It described itself as compute-starved while building competitive coding models on open-weight bases through heavy post-training. Grok 4.6's gains came almost entirely from post-training rather than a larger base model, an early indication of how the acquisition may benefit both parties.
Underwriting GPUs
Earlier this week, NVIDIA announced memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR to raise $500 billion of third-party capital to finance AI infrastructure buildout. Jensen Huang said of the deal that its goal was “bringing the world's leading long-term capital providers together to independently underwrite AI infrastructure”, with investors treating AI hardware and infrastructure as an asset class for the first time.
Jensen Huang clarified that the facility was not a substitute for insurance underwriting of new developments, saying that “in some cases, NVIDIA may provide a residual-value support mechanism for up to 25% of an opportunity, assessed carefully on a project-by-project basis.” Notably, the deals are still in MOUs and remain subject to execution of final agreements, which NVIDIA has walked away from in the past. For example, the $100 billion OpenAI MOU never closed; Huang later said it was “never a commitment” and the deal ultimately settled into a $30 billion equity stake.
The Next AI-Proof Font
In July, Design studio Seneda & Abrucio and Copenhagen type foundry Playtype released ShieldFont, an open-source typeface that feeds AI scrapers falsified text by substituting words. The font extends OpenType glyph substitution from individual ligatures to entire words, so the page reads normally in a browser while a scraper pulling the raw HTML collects grammatically correct but meaningless sentences. The creators describe the defense as “economic, not cryptographic: the aim is to turn cheap, indiscriminate scraping into slower, more complex, per-target work.”
ShieldFont is the latest scraping-obscuring typeface in a long line of glyph-substitution fonts, which exploit the gap between a page’s code and its rendering, including those created by TuringFonts and LayerX. These fonts, which render normally, are generally considered preferable to computer-vision-obscuring fonts like Ghost Font, which creates words out of thousands of moving dots, and Decoy Font, which hides messages in blurred letterforms behind sharp decoys. However, such fonts are always in an arms race with AI, which eventually solves them over time: ZXX, which camouflaged letters against 2013-era OCR and was called surveillance-proof, can now be read by computer vision models.

Israeli startup Irregular hosted the common evaluation testbed behind the OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta rogue-AI incidents of the past two weeks, with all three labs pointing to the same 35-person, $80-million-funded, $450-million-valued Tel Aviv sandbox where a shared misconfiguration let their models reach the public internet.
Amazon backed a 7.65-gigawatt on-site natural-gas plant for its planned Pecos County, Texas data center, with permits authorizing up to 33 million tons of CO₂ annually (roughly double the current dirtiest US plant) as tech giants increasingly bypass grid queues with private gas capacity.
Kalshi flagged suspected insider trades to federal authorities as prediction-market abuse became a growing problem, per Fortune, with the exchange citing years of investment in its surveillance system and a pending federal probe into a former White House teleprompter operator accused of trading Kalshi contracts on advance knowledge of Trump speeches.
